Light Floor Sanding & Screening

Not every wooden floor needs a full, deep sand. If your floors are looking a little tired, lightly scratched, or the finish has started to dull, a light sand — also known as a buff and recoat or screen and recoat — could be the perfect solution. At Natural Finishers, we offer light floor sanding services that refresh your wood floors quickly and affordably, extending the life of your existing finish without the cost and disruption of a full restoration.

What Is Light Floor Sanding?

Light floor sanding involves gently abrading the top layer of your floor’s existing finish using a fine-grit screen or buffer. This removes surface scratches, scuffs, and dullness without cutting into the bare wood. Once screened, a fresh coat of lacquer or oil is applied, restoring the floor’s sheen and protection. It’s ideal for floors that are structurally sound but have lost their lustre — typically floors that were last sanded 3–5 years ago and are showing signs of surface wear.

Our Light Sanding Process

Light floor sanding is quick, clean, and minimally disruptive:

  1. Assessment – We inspect your floor to confirm it’s suitable for a light sand rather than a full restoration.
  2. Cleaning – The floor is thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, grit, and residue.
  3. Screening – We use a rotary buffer with fine abrasive screens to gently scuff the existing finish, creating a key for the new coat.
  4. Spot Repairs – Minor scratches and marks are addressed during the screening process.
  5. Recoating – A fresh coat of lacquer, oil, or hardwax oil is applied to restore protection and shine.
  6. Rapid Drying – Light sanding recoats typically dry within hours, meaning minimal downtime for your home or business.

When to Choose Light Sanding Over Full Sanding

Light sanding is perfect when your floor’s finish is worn but the wood beneath is in good condition. It’s faster, cheaper, and less disruptive than a full sand. However, if your floors have deep scratches, stains that penetrate the wood, or the boards are damaged, a full restoration may be necessary. Based in Maidstone, Kent, Natural Finishers offers both services across the South East and the whole UK. We’ll always give you honest advice about which option is right for your floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between light sanding and full sanding?

Light sanding (screening) only removes the top layer of finish, not the wood itself. Full sanding strips everything back to bare timber. Light sanding is quicker, cheaper, and ideal for maintenance between full restorations.

We recommend a light sand and recoat every 3–5 years for residential floors, or every 1–3 years for commercial floors with heavy traffic. This extends the life of your floor significantly.

Most rooms can be screened and recoated in a single day. The new finish is typically touch-dry within 2–4 hours and ready for normal use within 24 hours.

Light sanding works on most lacquered and oiled wood floors in reasonable condition. Floors with deep damage, old wax coatings, or failing finishes may require a full sand instead. We’ll advise during our assessment.

Light sanding is typically 40–60% cheaper than a full restoration. Contact Natural Finishers on 07940 528 315 for a free quote based on your floor’s size and condition.
